Things To Do |
WHALE WATCHING This isn't called the Whale Coast for nothing. September to December every year sees the Walker Bay coastline, of which Gansbaai is a part, alive with activity on a massive scale as the Southern Right Whales come 'home' to welcome their new calves into the world. Stroll along the water's edge or enjoy a picnic lunch on the rocks and you're sure to be joined at some point by one or more of these incredible creatures as they swim lazily by, no more than a few metres away. Alternatively, book a whale watching boat trip and be amazed by the grace and beauty of the creatures that have given this stretch of coastline its name. DISCOVER OUR ROOTS Historians agree that De Kelders, just outside the town centre, has one of the oldest associations with mankind in the world. Excavated remains have revealed that, more than 70 000 years ago, while Neanderthal man was still roaming much of the world, his more modern brothers and sisters had already made Klipgat Cave their home. Located in the Walker Bay Nature Reserve next to De Kelders, Klipgat Cave is one of only three places in South Africa where remains this old have been discovered. And once you've visited your ancestors, take a walk along the De Kelders shoreline and discover the many breathtaking caves that line its shores and which once served as home to the Khoisan people. SHARK CAGE DIVING The people of Gansbaai are certainly interesting and hospitable, but the inhabitants of the area that will really make your stay here an experience to be remembered aren't those that you'll encounter while walking through the town. The waters around Dyer Island and Geyser Rock are widely regarded as the best place in the world to observe and dive with Great White Sharks. A short drive from Baleana Bay lies Kleinbaai, the shark cage diving Mecca of South Africa. Visit these magnificent creatures in their own homes - under the water, or stay safely ensconced on a ski boat while your guide invites them to the surface to say hello. Either way, it is an experience you won't soon forget. OVERBERG BIO-DIVERSITY The region surrounding Gansbaai is home to some 1500 species of fynbos. Take a walk along one of the many easy trails that criss-cross the area and enjoy the heady aromas, beautiful plants, and striking views from the hilltops. |
